The innovative Worldcoin project, spearheaded by Sam Altman, has unveiled an ambitious plan to introduce its own layer-2 blockchain known as World Chain.

In a recent blog post on Wednesday, the company outlined its goal of enhancing the integration of Worldcoin’s protocol by harnessing the power of Ethereum’s Optimism’s OP Stack to boost scalability and operational efficiency.

This significant announcement follows Worldcoin’s remarkable growth, with more than 10 million individuals from 160 countries already in possession of a World ID and compatible wallet, facilitating an impressive 75 million transactions. The surge in users has prompted the need for a robust blockchain solution to sustain and amplify this momentum.

The World Chain development team promises users of this platform, also dubbed as “the blockchain of humans,” a substantial increase in throughput. This advancement will streamline the onboarding process for new participants and expedite transactions for existing users.

Furthermore, the platform ensures universal access to the public network, with verified users holding a World ID receiving priority. To reduce entry barriers, verified users will be granted “some free gas,” alleviating the financial burden of blockchain transactions.

According to the blog, the primary token for World Chain will remain Ethereum (ETH), but users will have the option to pay fees using Worldcoin’s native token, WLD. This strategic decision aims to enhance accessibility and simplify transactions within the ecosystem.

Emphasizing inclusivity and community governance, World Chain is designed to be permissionless, open-source, and ultimately governed independently by the community. This decentralized approach underscores Worldcoin’s dedication to creating an inclusive and democratic blockchain environment.

The introduction of World Chain marks a significant milestone in blockchain technology, focusing on human-centered solutions and scalability. Developers will have the opportunity to leverage World Chain’s extensive user base to create applications tailored to the diverse needs of individuals globally.

The official launch of World Chain is scheduled for the third quarter of 2024. Additionally, Worldcoin has recently introduced enhanced privacy features, allowing users to revoke World ID verification to enhance personal data security.
