Gods Unchained, the innovative NFT trading card game by Immutable Games, is extending its reach to the Epic Games’ extensive network of 230 million users.
Starting June 21, Gods Unchained has secured its spot on the Epic Games Store, welcoming an expansive community of players to its Web3 trading card realm.
Gods Unchained is an engaging trading card game akin to celebrated franchises like Hearthstone or Magic: The Gathering Arena. What sets it apart is the usage of NFTs, where each card, representing an immutable asset on the Ethereum Layer-2 network, can be traded and truly owned by players. Since its rollout in June 2019, the game has steadily grown in popularity, boasting 80,000 active players per week by the start of 2022.
The Epic Games Store, often compared to digital game distribution platforms like Steam or GOG.com, hosts more than 230 million PC gaming enthusiasts eager to discover new games, as stated in a review posted in March 2022.
Gods Unchained’s executive producer, Daniel Paez, sees the inclusion of the game on Epic Games as a watershed moment. In his words, “The introduction of Gods Unchained to the Epic Games Store, one of the premier PC gaming platforms globally, carries immense importance. The prospect of reaching out to a fresh, enormous community of PC gaming aficionados and TCG enthusiasts is exhilarating.”
The move arrives amidst growing tensions between Web3 publishers and Steam, the world’s dominant PC game distributor. In a controversial decision in late 2021, Steam decided to shut its doors to Web3 games and went as far as to remove Age of Rust, citing the unique benefits the game offered to its NFT holders.
In a rebuttal to Steam’s approach, a group of former MetaMask collaborators launched Hyperplay in March, a competing platform designed to accommodate Web3 games. Hyperplay grants users access to the Epic Games and GOG.com stores and curates its unique collection of Web3 titles. On June 8, Hyperplay secured a $12 million investment to boost the platform’s growth and outreach.
