Pavel Durov, the creator of Telegram, has revealed the messaging platform’s heightened focus on blockchain technology by outlining its intentions to deepen integration with The Open Network (TON). At the Token2049 conference in Dubai, Durov unveiled Telegram’s strategic move towards incorporating blockchain-based functionalities, such as tokenized stickers and emojis.
Enhancing Revenue Sharing and Tokenization
Telegram is poised to transform the way content creators profit from their online presence. Durov announced that the platform will distribute 50% of its advertising revenue to users, including channel owners and creators engaged in the TON network.
This initiative seeks to establish a more fair revenue-sharing model, diverging from the prevalent practice on other social media platforms that monetize user data through ad sales.
Telegram’s foray into tokenizing user features has already proven successful with its namespace, leading to significant sales. Durov stressed the significance of TON’s scalability to accommodate the anticipated surge in transaction volumes as more platform components transition to tokenization.
The announcement coincides with Tether’s launch of a dollar-pegged stablecoin and a gold-backed token on the TON network, signaling a growing adoption of Telegram’s foundational blockchain framework. This partnership highlights Telegram’s ambitious strategy to leverage blockchain technology for enriching user engagement and economic structures within its ecosystem.
