The United States of America (USA) and Nigeria are set to explore potential partnership opportunities in the digital economy, emerging technology, and the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). The discussions are intended to bolster economic ties between the two nations and promote deeper collaborations in these fields.
Mr. Arthur Brown, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy, disclosed that senior U.S. government officials will participate in a conference in Abuja organized under the U.S.-Nigeria Bi-National Commission. This conference will serve as a platform for both countries to engage in dialogue regarding the digital economy, emerging technology, and AI progress.
At the conclusion of a four-day Workshop on National Artificial Intelligence Strategy in Abuja, Mr. Brown emphasized the significance of cultivating partnerships and cooperating to drive strong, resilient, and inclusive economic development. The United States is prepared to collaborate with Nigeria as equal partners across various domains, including talent development, infrastructure, research, and innovation. Additionally, Mr. Brown praised Nigeria for its backing of a pivotal United Nations resolution on AI adoption and affirmed the U.S. government’s ongoing collaboration with Nigeria on economic matters.
Nigeria has demonstrated an increasing dedication to AI and emerging technologies in recent times. In November 2020, the country established the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), the first of its kind in Africa, signifying a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to AI. The establishment of NCAIR aligns with Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy 2020 – 2030, which identifies AI as one of the country’s eight digital economy pillars.
Following the inception of NCAIR, AI has been prominently featured in governmental policy endeavors. NCAIR has initiated programs to educate children on coding and machine learning, equipping them with knowledge of AI and other emerging technologies. Furthermore, the Nigerian government has instructed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to offer AI research grants to tertiary institutions to promote innovation and enhance economic resilience.
In March 2023, Nigeria formulated a National AI policy, developed collaboratively by the National Information Technology Development Agency and industry professionals, to reinforce its commitment to AI. The country has also introduced initiatives such as the 3 million Technical Talents (3MTT) program and the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme (NAIRS) to train youths in AI, as well as support AI startups and researchers.
The forthcoming discussions between the USA and Nigeria present an opportunity for both nations to exchange knowledge, expertise, and best practices in the digital economy, emerging technology, and AI progress. Through aligning AI governance and ensuring the safe, secure, transparent, and reliable deployment of AI, the partnership aims to propel economic growth and innovation in both countries.
