A resident of Hatzic faced a financial setback of approximately $25,000 due to falling prey to a cyber-currency fraud, as per the Mission RCMP report.
As detailed in the weekly “Community Connection” crime summary by the detachment, the woman was initially contacted through Facebook by the purported scammer. She was lured into making minor investments that yielded quick returns.
Driven by the allure of profits, she continued to pour more money into the scheme. Consequently, she unintentionally granted the scammer unrestricted access to her bank account by downloading a specific application.
The questionable transactions prompted the woman’s bank to freeze her accounts to mitigate further losses.
Mission RCMP recommended that individuals contemplating cryptocurrency ventures seek advice from a reputable financial consultant and promptly alert their bank to any suspicious activities.
In a separate occurrence in March 2023, a Mission resident was tricked into losing $30,000 through investments in diverse cryptocurrencies.
