Mining Bitcoin involves complex computational operations that validate transactions and incorporate them into the Bitcoin blockchain. This process is notorious for its substantial energy demands, often powered by carbon-emitting fossil fuels. As reported in early 2022, the Bitcoin mining network was estimated to emit approximately 42 megatons of carbon dioxide, which represents around 0.08% of global carbon production.
